This Australian native evergreen perennial has deep-purple foliage. Plant in March or April; blooms from May through July. Lovely little blue flowers with yellow hearts on graceful stems may be produced under the right conditions.

Use

Not very hardy; best planted in very mild coastal climates. Dianella prefers acidic, well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Tolerates periods of drought.

Planting

Plant in loose, acidic, well-drained soil with no trace of lime. Once the plant is established, it is quite tolerant of dry summer weather and can stand short periods of frost down to -7° in winter.

Maintenance

Spruce the plant up from time to time by removing dead or damaged foliage.
