Sassafras albidum

This small deciduous tree, native to the southeast of the USA, is cultivated in Europe for its ornamental qualities: elegant foliage, which turns yellow and red in the fall, and attractive bark. It was traditionally used in the Native American pharmacopoeia, and its roots were once used to flavour root beer.
