Camellia Okan

(higo) From February to April, this very compact shrub produces simple, scarlet-edged white blossoms with large clusters of golden stamens at their centres. Higo Camellias are a group of japonica varieties prized by amateurs for their historical significance (they were the flowers of the Samurai) and their aesthetic qualities.

Indoors: keep the plant in a cool room while blooming and water regularly. Outdoors: as an isolated specimen or in association with other acid-loving shrubs such as Azaleas, Magnolias or Rhododendrons. Patio or terrace: in large containers, or trained against a wall or trellis.

Ideally in partial shade, protected from cold winds. Remove the plant from its container and thoroughly soak the root ball. Prepare a mixture of 25% peat, 50% ericaceous soil and 25% potting soil. Dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and half-fill it with this mixture, then place the plant (not too deeply) in the hole. Finish adding the compost and water well.

Water regularly during flowering and dry weather. Add a specialised fertiliser each spring. Takes well to pruning after blooming.
